The CDP, or census-designated place, Poipu, Hawaii is on the south side of Kaua’i Island and a part of Kaua’i County. Poipu spans 2.8 square miles, .03 square miles of which is water covered. Poipu Beach is located in the resort area of the community and has been named America’s Best Beach by the Travel Channel. The community is also home to Shipwreck Beach, which is separated from the gentle beaches and coves of the area by the rocky coastline. Local wildlife in and around Poipu include humpback whales spouting offshore, Large Honu, otherwise known as Hawaiian green sea turtles, and about 1200 of the endangered Hawaiin monk seals. There are several public gardens in the area including Allerton Garden, Moir Gardens and McBryde Garden. Other attractions in Poipu include Makauwahi Cave, the largest limestone cave in the State of Hawaii and the Spouting Hore located along the southern coast of Kauai. The Spouting Horn is an area of eroded lava rocks that create a narrow opening that shoots spray as much as 50 feet in the air.
